What is the best cabin deck on a cruise ship? ›

The most stable part of the ship is its lowest point of gravity, so on a lower deck, at the center.

The higher and further forward (or aft) you go, the more motion you will feel, especially in rough seas. Your View Preferences: Upper decks typically provide more expansive views of the ocean and ports. If waking up to a breathtaking sea view is important to you, consider booking a room on a higher deck.

Below deck 1 on a cruise ship is typically the lowest level of the ship, where the crew quarters, engine room, and other operational areas are located. Passengers generally do not have access to these areas.

Those areas where passengers tend to congregate. Large groups of people make LOTS of noise. The areas around elevator banks and stairways on cruise ships can be noisy, just like they can be at hotels on land. You'll get people milling around talking as they wait for an elevator car.

Generally, sitting on the upper deck is preferable because of the usually smaller cabin and lower density configuration (2-4-2 vs. 3-4-3). It's also quieter sitting upstairs. For a day flight being here may be an advantage, since you can receive service more easily, or in premium cabins, perhaps serve yourself.

To reduce motion sickness, choose a stateroom in the middle of the ship on a lower deck. You will feel any sway of the ship less in this section. Although it may seem counterintuitive, if you're worried about seasickness on a cruise, book a stateroom with a window or a veranda.

If your cruise is a closed-loop or a round-trip beginning and ending at the same port, your cruise is likely to be equally scenic on the port or starboard side. You may just see different things at different parts of your journey. The same is true if you are cruising across the open ocean.

Check for decks close to the crew service entrances as well as the main cruise engine. Such decks will have a higher level of noise compared to a sandwiched deck area.

Midship cabins

The big allure of a midship cabin is its stability. You won't feel the rocking of the sea in a midship cabin nearly as much as you will in a cabin toward the front or back of a vessel. This is because ships are like teeter-totters. They pitch forward and back around a central axis that barely moves.

Ultimately, the choice between Deck 7 and other decks depends on your priorities. If you value ease of access to facilities and a serene atmosphere, Deck 7 is an excellent choice. However, if you prioritize breathtaking views or convenient port access, you may want to consider other options.

The forward is subject to the most movement out of anywhere on a ship. And the higher the deck, the more pronounced that rolling and swaying motion tends to feel. Movement at the aft is a bit less drastic than the forward, but still isn't the most stable place for those who are prone to seasickness.
