BA Film and Television graduate

I'm happy to share that I graduated from the University of Warwick with a Bachelor's Degree in Film and Television Studies, achieving First Class in my dissertation! This degree filled with invaluable learning experiences and challenges was everything that I wanted from my time and education at Warwick, and even more. I thoroughly enjoyed every one of my modules that perfectly balanced learning about film and TV history, concepts, culture, and criticism. This degree has prepared me well as I feel fully ready to embark on the adventure of job hunting and getting my foot in the door of the film industry! I am deeply grateful to my professors and mentors who have supported and inspired me along the way. Their guidance and encouragement have been instrumental in shaping my path. As well as to the lifelong friends that I made who share my passion for the arts and without whom this journey wouldn't have been as enriching 💜 These last three years have been incredibly rewarding and I have grown tremendously both personally and professionally 🌟

“This core purpose of education can be broken down into the following four basic purposes.PersonalEducation should enable young people to engage with the world within them as well as the world around them. In Western cultures, there is a firm distinction between the two worlds, between thinking and feeling, objectivity and subjectivity. This distinction is misguided. There is a deep correlation between our experience of the world around us and how we feel. As we explored in the previous chapters, all individuals have unique strengths and weaknesses, outlooks and personalities. Students do not come in standard physical shapes, nor do their abilities and personalities. They all have their own aptitudes and dispositions and different ways of understanding things. Education is therefore deeply personal. It is about cultivating the minds and hearts of living people. Engaging them as individuals is at the heart of raising achievement.”Sir Ken Robinson“Imagine If”

Numerous people have asked me, "Why didn't you participate in any of Clayton State's commencement ceremonies this past weekend since you are a 2023 graduate?"First, I want to congratulate all my peers who graduated this semester!! Despite my absence, my spirits and prayers were with you all.But for me, I know that my work isn't done. I've caught my second wind and am focused on what's in store for me next year. So, instead of celebrating, I'm still studying and preparing like I have four more years left. And I will do that every four years for the rest of my life. 😎 I've studied a lot of great athletes, entertainers, politicians, and academics, and they all have one thing in common; They are obsessed with learning from their losses and mistakes and enjoy utilizing their earned wisdom on new challenges while inspiring others. And how well they do that under pressure defines their character and leadership style to the masses. For me, receiving a college degree is just the result of being someone who wanted to spend 1,460 days working on their writing, communication, and time-management skills to prepare themselves for a new set of challenges that requires the addition of even more skills.I've shown people that I can spend 1,460 days achieving a goal against all odds while inspiring and communicating to others that they can do the same. The most beneficial thing I got from being a college student at Clayton State University was the opportunity to practice and receive valuable feedback on my efforts from excellent researchers and practitioners in their respective fields. When I started college, I didn't have an endgame. I had a game plan. That's the difference between me and most people, in and out of college.Besides, I'll be back in Spring 2024.#Dreamsmadereal #NoLimits

Thought-provoking stuff, from Prof. Alvin. At 16, I thought I'd end up working a 9-5 factory job. My foray into journalism began by accident after I reviewed some music gigs (free tickets). Later on, I ended up as a political reporter. I can't remember how that came about. "I still have no goals. I have a job. I do it. On the side I pursue my interests and passion." Something I've long admired about Alvin is his realism. He is who he is and he accepts others for who they are. In all our conversations, I've never once heard him say, "You should," or "You have to..." Whether you like to set goals and have structured plans or prefer to engage in life with more of an intuitive messiness, live in a way that resonates with you, and let's allow space for others to do the same. Whatever job you have - a factory worker, writer, therapist, or university professor - wherever you go, there you are. Let's do our best to let go of the shoulds and musts of others so we might live authentically - and perhaps messily - on our own terms, whatever that means to us.

Okay, so. I'm still so excited to be starting my doctoral studies at Morgan State University... in 9 weeks 😆. So, I made a new countdown timer. But not for me! (My very first day, move-in-day at my first HBCU was more than 10 years ago😮💨.) IF you are: 💡First-Time in College;💡First-Generation College Going;💡Black, Brown, of the Global Majority;💡Will be Black, Brown, of the Global Majority @ a Traditionally White Institution (or PWI);💡Lower-Income;💡A bit confused and need some guidance from someone who has successfully navigated where you're going; Then this TIMER is a reminder to and for you. If this makes you nervous, that's cool. But, I created a handy-dandy guide to the first 30 days on campus. These are my top tips (and explanations) for a successful start to your semester. And, if you identify with any of the descriptors above, you need this guide! You can find this guide on the How to Reach Hillman website (for download).

My First 6 Months as an International StudentOn January 12, 2024, I landed in Saint Louis to pursue my masters at Webster University As I gazed at the snow-covered landscape, I couldn't help but wonder if I'd accidentally booked a flight to the mountains! Those first few weeks were tough. Simple things like getting phone plans or opening a bank account felt like solving a puzzle. Thankfully, my landlord became my guide in exploring American life, from grocery shopping to mastering public transit. As classes began, I found myself navigating not just a new education system but a whole new culture. The professors were approachable, eager to help, and always ready with a word of encouragement. My roommates became my unofficial tutors in the unwritten rules of American university life.By March, I had landed an on-campus job, adding "understanding American workplace culture" to my growing list of skills. Now, six months in, I'm still learning every day. The practical, hands-on approach of the US education system continues to challenge and excite me.I've discovered that real education happens not just in classrooms but in every interaction and every challenge overcome. To my fellow international students: embrace the journey. The confusion, the culture shock, the triumphs—they're all part of the story. Your story. Our story. What's been your most surprising experience in a new place?#InternationalStudent #StudyAbroad #PersonalGrowth
